Library Director Position Announcement

CITY OF ATLANTA

PUBLIC LIBRARY DIRECTOR

POSITION SUMMARY –

Under general supervision of the City Manager, manages, supervises and directs all operations, services and functions of the Atlanta Public Library.  Works closely with the City Council, Friends of the Library and Atlanta Library Board.


JOB FUNCTIONS -

  • Develops, recommends, and implements long- and short-range strategic plans.
  • Identifies, review, approves and directs library outreach and facility-based programs and initiatives.
  • Compiles, prepares, presents and justifies budget proposals and manages budget throughout the fiscal year.  The current operating budget for the public library is $350,300.
  • Identifies, recommends and implements policies and procedures.
  • Researches, compiles statistics, writes grant applications; monitors and prepares grant reporting requirements.
  • Oversees the upkeep and operation of the library facility.
  • Plans, provides, and coordinates a variety of educational, cultural, and informational programs relating to identified and/or anticipated needs of library patrons.
  • Assesses, reviews, and approves a variety of library programs provided to local organizations, clubs, and other libraries.

OTHER IMPORTANT JOB FUNCTIONS –

  • Conducts interviews, hires, evaluates, trains, disciplines, and evaluates library staff as required.  The current full-time employee count is four FTE’s and two full-time grant program VISTA employees.
  • Develops, reviews and/or approves work schedules requiring staffing of services and facilities outside the traditional work week/schedule.
  • Works with the library board, its members, other libraries, agencies and services regarding lending, collecting, distributing and managing traditional and non-traditional library media (audio and video tapes, e.g.,)
  • Attends meetings, conferences, and seminars of national, state, and local professional organizations. Performs other duties as assigned or required.


QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS –

  • Requirements include a bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 3 to 5 years of library experience in a public or educational system – prior experience as a director is not required..
  • Strong background in computer and software technology a plus.  Experience offering non-traditional library programming such as coding, etc. is very desirable.)
  • Strong interpersonal skills along with proven judgement skills.  A friendly, confident and outgoing personality for public interaction is highly desired.
  • Strong grant writing skills.
  • Ability to develop excellent children’s programming.


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS –

  • May be required to work outside the traditional work week/schedule.
  • Must attend FOLIO and Library Board Meetings and some City Council meetings may be required.
  • Must attend workshops and conferences in order to remain current on best practices.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT –

  • The Library Director serves at the pleasure of the City Manager and is an at will employee.
  • Must have and maintain a valid drivers’ license unless exempted by the City Manager.
  • Pre-employment drug screening is required.

COMPENSATION –

The starting compensation is $54,000 per year with employee health insurance positions paid completely by the City.  Other benefits include retirement with TMRS, longevity benefits and educations incentives.  The City offers standard vacation and sick leave benefits.  The City of Atlanta is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
