A New Fire Station for Atlanta

After years of dreaming about a more modern, efficient facility, the Atlanta Fire Department will finally have a new home. A ceremonial ground breaking was held on August 5, 2004 amidst clumps of grass on South Louise Street where the famed Bivins-Trice Stadium complex once stood. Tossing dirt with the best of them, Mayor Kay Phillips told the gathering of city council members, AFD firefighters, AFD Ladies Auxiliary, AFD volunteer firefighters, retired firefighters and AFD supporters, that the new station was “a long time coming and well deserved.”

Fire Department Chief David Burden called the facility a “dream come true.” The new building will house all administrative services, sleeping quarters, a self contained training room that can also serve as an emergency operations center for the city and four drive through bays to house eight pieces of equipment that will be able to exit from either end of each bay.

Chief Burden anticipates a completion date in January of 2005, when all AFD activities can be consolidated on the seven acre site. Currently the AFD, with a paid and volunteer staff of 34, operates out of multiple facilities. The fourteen firefighters currently employed by the AFD are crossed trained, each holding EMS, Fire and HazMat certifications. The AFD operates the only HazMat Team in the area as well as providing the only Mobile ICU ambulance.
