Atlanta to Recycle Electronic Waste

3/10/2006
A unique opportunity awaits area residents on April 1st--a chance to rid themselves of unwanted electronic waste or E-Waste. On that first Saturday in April, members of the Amity Study Club will man a drop-off container at the former Atlanta Fire Department building on East Hiram Street. Hours for collection begin at 9 a.m. and run through 3 p.m.

More than 130,000 Americans replace old computers every day and dispose of 2 million tons of out-dated electronic equipment every year. Those products contain dangerouse materials such as nickel, zinc, chromium and lead. Such hazardous and toxic waste create environmental risks if disposed of inappropriately.

Items that will be accepted for recycling include any electronic product that contains a computer chip such as fax machines, computer components, televisions, digital cameras, computer games, laptops, cell phones, electric cords, power supplies and printers. Metals like gold in older computer chips can be removed, avoiding burial in landfills. The E-Waste program can extend the life of landfills by reducing waste going to the sites.

Plan to clear the home or office of unwanted electronic clutter on April 1st and help keep the environment green and clean.
