Atlanta’s Improving Vision

8/30/2005
Citing extensive local improvements between 1995 and 2005, community leaders met at the Richey Center on August 16th to discuss Atlanta’s economic future. Billed as a Strategic Planning Session, the meeting sponsored by the Atlanta City Development Corporation included members of the Atlanta City Council, the Area Chamber of Commerce, the Atlanta Tourism Committee and Atlanta Economic Development Corporation. The evening served as an opportunity for participants to compare notes on the future of Atlanta.

Led by Jerry Sparks, the Director of Business Retention and Expansion for the Texarkana Chamber of Commerce, the discussions resulted in a better understanding of the roles that each group plays in the economic development of Atlanta. The groups have been directly responsible for the construction of the Richey Center, the location of Prestige Trailers into a shell building at the Atlanta Business Park, redevelopment of downtown Atlanta and extensive marketing of Atlanta to potential residents and the traveling public. Key points for further development included
Atlanta’s resources and the ongoing relationship to local industries and businesses. In addition to continuing current projects and programs aimed at improving Atlanta, each organization voiced interest in re-establishing a Leadership Training Program as well as targeting businesses and industry that complement Atlanta’s current business community.

“This meeting was a follow-up to a gathering of Atlanta leaders in 2000 where several goals were established that have resulted in proven benefits for Atlanta. Meetings like this allow these diverse groups to create a vision of where Atlanta should be in the next 5-10 years,” said Nancy Morris, President of the Board of Directors for the Atlanta CDC. Morris continued, “We hope that such collaborative events will continue the forward momentum of Atlanta’s growing prosperity.”
